Make up Information

Since we are getting ready for competition, we need to talk a little bit about stage makeup for your dancers.

You might be wondering why you would buy makeup specifically for dance when you already have plenty at home? Well the truth is, there is quite a difference between the two types of makeup and although it is possible to use everyday makeup, it is definitely not as effective.

Unlike everyday makeup, stage makeup’s role is to highlight your facial features for performance under the bright stage lights. Therefore, stage makeup is not only a lot thicker than normal, but also a lot more pigmented. It creates a great base to build coverage and to create a certain look.

Furthermore, due to the heat of the lights, costume changes and of course sweat, stage makeup is designed for long wear and heavy duty. Because of this, parents can sometimes get worried about the thick and dramatic look of the makeup on their dancers, but it is important to remember it is made to be viewed at a distance as opposed to face to face.

Makeup is also used to create uniformity amongst dancers by creating a similar look and it is therefore important that all the dancers not only have a similar style of makeup application, but a similar intensity, which can only be achieved with stage makeup. It is for all of these reasons that we strongly recommend that you purchase a stage makeup kit for your dancer.

Strive has a makeup tutorial video on our website that you can access that will show you all the steps of applying Strive’s signature makeup look for competition using stage makeup. In this online makeup tutorial, we are using a Ben Nye stage makeup palette on our model. Most Strive dancers use this stage makeup kit, and we strongly recommend that you get one for your dancer so that you can achieve the Strive signature makeup look easily. https://www.strivedanceacademy.ca/makeup
